Ven. Professor Tharele Dhammaratana Thero
Prof. Therele Dhammarathana was born in 1961 in Therela, Monaragala District. He obtained his primary education from Therela Vidyalaya and secondary education from Weliyaya Siri Piyaratana Vidyayatana Pirivena, Monaragala District. For higher education he entered the University of Kelaniya in 1985 and followed a Special Degree Course. He read Buddhist Culture as his major with Sociology as subsidiary subject. After obtaining B.A. Degree with First Class in 1991 he was appointed a temporary assistant lecturer in the Department of Pali & Buddhist Studies, University of Kelaniya, in 1992 and then he was admitted to the permanent staff in 1993. He followed a M.A. Degree Course in the Post Graduate Institute of Pali & Buddhist Studies, University of Kelaniya, and completed it in 1994. In 1995 he entered to the Benaras Hindu University in India to study for M.A. Degree and completed it with first class obtaining B.H.U. Medal of merit in 1997. For the Ph.D. Degree he entered to the University of Delhi in India in 1997. The Doctor of Philosophy Degree was conferred on him by the university for his Doctoral Thesis on "Cultural History of the Abhayagiri Tradition in Sri Lanka". At present Ven. Dr. Therele Dhammarathana is a senior lecturer in the Department of Pali & Buddhist Studies, University of Kelaniya, and a visiting lecturer in several other educational institutions of Sri Lanka. Ven. Dr. Therele Dhammarathana has published a number of articles in the journals related to the Buddhist Culture.
